Are you looking to build a business website to get out of your current 9-5 job? Let’s see what you need to get started.
First, Get a Niche
I think the Urban Dictionary Website defined the word Niche the best:
A position or activity that particularly suits somebody’s talents and personality or that somebody can make his or her own.
There is probably something you enjoy that you know a lot about. Why not use your knowledge of this niche and build a business around it. Here are a few niches you could use:
- Travel – Road Trips, Around the World, Favorite Places
- Hobby – Stamp Collecting, Coin Collecting, Baseball Cards, Model Building, Drones
- Sports – Favorite Team, Favorite Sport
To give you a personal example of a niche, I built a website for my interest in collecting US coins known as CollectUSCoins.com. The majority of the articles are based on US coins, but I have gone beyond in a few by including foreign coins. Using something broad as US coins, I can expand on different general topics.
Have you been able to think of a niche for your personal business? If you have, lets move on.
Think Up Some Keywords for Your Niche
Now that you have a niche, you need to get some keywords to write about and get your articles into search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo.
For my Collect US Coins website, I started looking into particular US coins like the Peace Dollar. This is what appeared on Google:
Wow! 116,000,000 results were found for peace dollars. It’s going to be tough to get on Page 1 of Google with a keyword phrase of ‘peace dollars’, but what if we try to use a more specific phrase.
Using the phrase ‘peace dollars the 20th century silver dollar’, we’ve gone down from 116,000,000 to 763,000 results, and look, my web page is ranked #3 here. Woohoo! I’m on the first page!
So, when thinking about keywords, start broad and then think of more specific phrases. Use Google to help search for these keywords. Try changing some words in these phrases and see what you can come up with. See if you can think of 5-10 keywords to start on your niche website.
Create a Website
At this point, you should have a niche you want to write about, and keywords to use. Now you can start building your website. If you are knowledgeable about website design and development, you can build one from scratch yourself, but if you’re one of the majority that have no idea how to build one, you can use a Content Management System (CMS). The most popular CMS platform is WordPress.
WordPress takes care of the technical parts of your website. Your biggest issues will be what to write about, adding images to your articles and what theme you want to use that will make your website appealing to others. If there is anything else you want to add, you can go through many, many plugins to find exactly what you need. You’ll have an organized dashboard to help you add and update pages and posts.
Write! Write! Write!
Of course, the main thing you’ll need to do is write content. With those 5-10 keywords you thought of earlier, you can start writing content on each one. Some say you should write at least 1000 words for each post, but it’s not always easy to stretch a topic. I try to write between 800 and 1000 words for a post, though there have been some post that have been as low as 500 words. Remember when you were in school and the teacher wanted you to write a 500 or 1000 word essay on a particular topic? Think of that as practice for your business website. You will pretty much be writing essays on your website.
You’re putting together this website for an important reason, whether it be to make extra money or make a living out of it. In any case, you’ll be spending a lot of time doing this and what I gave you here is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a lot to do if you’re looking to make revenue on your business website.
